Raven Klaasen became the last local player to exit the South African Open tennis tournament on Thursday.
The Kuils River based player went down 6-4 7-5 in the round of last 16 to Taiwan’s Lu yen-Hsun whose reward was a quarter-final clash with top-seeded Gael Monfils.
Klaasen was always going to be up against it with the 101st ranked Taiwanese player a full 274 places higher on the ATP listing.
Frenchman Monfils overcame countryman Josselin Quanna in 6-4 7-5, with the help of 12 aces.
Second seed David Ferrer forced his way past Swedish qualifier Filip Prpic and went through to the quarters with a 6-3 6-4 win.
Ferrer, whose win was littered with unforced errors, meets Somdev Davvarman after the Indian player had beaten Brazilian Thiago Alves 6-4 6-1. Alves suffered badly during the match and had to be treated on court by a doctor.
