Waters makes final draw

Our rising squash star Siyoli Waters has qualified for the main draw of the Hong Kong Cup. Waters (nee Lusaseni) came through two tough qualifying clashes on Tuesday. First up she beat Japan’s Miwa Maekawa 3-1 (8-11 11-5 11-7 11-9) and then went on to beat Australian Zoe Petrovansky, the top qualifying seed, 3-1 (11-9 4-11 11-5 11-6).

They were two good victories for the Cape Town based player as both were ranked higher than her. She’s ranked 113th in the world while  Maekawa is placed 112th and Petrovansky 82nd.

Waters said after her gruelling day: ” We must always find things to celebrate. Today, it is the fact that I’ve made it into a main draw of a Tour 12 event. The tournament levels start at Level Four, up through Eight, 12, 20+, 45+ and 60+, the highest possible level.

“It gets harder to qualify for the bigger events. My current world ranking means that I would be on a reserve list for a Tour 45, not close to even qualifying for the event. It also means that when you eventually qualify, you’ll be playing against a Top 20 player! It doesn’t get easier does it?”

Waters now comes up against England’s Lauren Siddall who will be a tough nut to crack in the main draw (round one). She’s ranked 39th in the world and is seeded sixth for the tournament.
