Rik de Voest went through to the second round but Wesley Moodie and Jeff Coetzee both followed fellow South African Kevin Anderson out of the Australian Open tennis tournament in Melbourne Friday.
De Voest and American Scott Lipsky won in three sets (4-6 6-1 7-6) against India’s Rohan Bopanna and Pakistan’s Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi.
Their reward however is a meeting with the top-seeded Bryan brothers, Mike and Bob, in the next round.
Anderson, Moodie and Coetzee all suffered first round defeats, Anderson in the singles earlier in the week. Moodie was paired with Russian partner Mihail Youzhny while Coetzee and Dutch player Rogier Wassen lost to US pairing Sam Querrey and John Isner 6-4 6-1.
The tall Moodie, who shot up the world doubles rankings last year, and Youhzny went down 4-6 7-6 7-5 to Lucas Arnold Kerr of Argentina and Horic Tecau of Rumania, a combination that hasn’t exactly set the world doubles circuit alight until now.
Until about a year ago Coetzee was a former doubles partner of Moodie. Both are members of SASCOC’s OPEX programme of possible 2012 Olympic medallists.
