Wesley Moodie kept the South African flag flying but it took another four-hour epic at Wimbledon yesterday. Moodie and Belgian veteran Dick Norman are now through to the semi-finals with their 7-6 (9) 4-6 7-6 (7) 5-7 6-4 win against the fourth-seeded pairing of Mahesh Bhupathi (India) and Mark Knowles (Bahamas).

Champion BMX rider Sifiso Nhlapo is on the mend - and quickly too. After his horror crash on Monday and an intricate operation on his neck, the South African Beijing Olympic finalist was already up and walking Thursday. Nhlapo crashed while training in Norway and broke two verterbrae.

Despite the late hour and the long travel behind him, the South African was in good spirits. “It is only a short visit; I fly back to Davos on Monday, but it is important that I compete at the Africa Triathlon Championships.”

South African men’s hockey team return from Russia with a smile as wide as the Steppes after finishing the Four Nations tournament unbeaten and thrashing Canada 8-1 in the final. Seven goals in the first half saw the match sewn up at half-time and the young Canadian team were down and out as the South Africans celebrated their first tournament victory since 2007.

Ace BMX racer Sifiso Nhlapo will miss his August ‘home’ leg of the UCI World Cup in Pietermaritzburg after his horror crash in Norway on Monday. That’s the bad news. The good news is that the operation to his injured neck looks to have been a success and doctors are optimistic of a full recovery and he’s expected to at least be in Pietermaritzburg to support the world’s Elite riders.
